Preventing Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal (gum) disease. It is an infection of the tissues surrounding the teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Periodontal disease can sometimes be painless and, therefore, people may be unaware they have it. Only your dental professional can tell you for sure.
What Causes Periodontal Disease?
One of the primary factors contributing to periodontal disease is plaque, a sticky colourless deposit of bacteria that is constantly forming on the tooth. These bacteria buildup and can create toxins that can damage the gums.

While gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums, it may lead to more serious, destructive forms if left untreated.
What Are the Signs of Gingivitis?
  • Mild inflammation of the gums due to plaque buildup
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Gums that bleed easily
How Can I Prevent Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease?
To help protect against periodontal disease, it is essential to prevent the build up of plaque.
  • Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled or power toothbrush and an anti-gingivitis and anti-plaque toothpaste containing fluoride to strengthen teeth and prevent decay, such as Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste. Also adding an anti-bacterial rinse, like Crest Pro-Health Rinse, can help control plaque and gingivitis.
  • Floss once a day to remove food particles and plaque between teeth.
  • Get regular professional cleanings in addition to your daily oral care.

When you brush with Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste, stannous fluoride is released in the mouth, acting as an anti-microbial agent that kills harmful bacteria that cause plaque, gingivitis and bad breath.

Daily brushing with Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste, as well as rinsing with Crest Pro-Health Rinse, regular flossing and professional cleanings, will help prevent gingivitis and preserve your oral health.

Crest Pro-Health Rinse contains a clinically proven anti-microbial agent, cetylpyridinium chloride or CPC, that's attracted to bacteria in your mouth making it effective at fighting plaque, gingivitis and bad breath.
